aluminum snowmobile trailers - thoughts for haulin

Recommended Posts

truckin88

hey guys, what are your thoughts on these for horse hauling. My new Honda can pull 2000lbs, I want it under that, so I was figuring a aluminum trailer might be light enough to do the trick, or should I stick with a landscape style one?

My neighbor has the same CR-V and he pulls a TSC highside 6x10 with a toro zero turn on it, between his house and his parents. So I know it can pull w/o issue, just for hills and highways.

I use a triton snowmobile trailer, as I have two snowmobiles. In all reality, it is easier to use ramps on the trailer than to actually tip the bed of it. If you're just going to use it for tractors, I'd suggest a landscape trailer or the such where the tailgate of the trailer folds down and becomes a mesh type ramp. Just my $.02 from experience.

A landscape trailer is ok if you have a truck but you dont. A 7x10 aluminum trailer you can get 4 roundnose and be right at your 2000 limit. 400 x4 = 1200 + 600 for the trailer + 2 aluminum folding ramp @ 65lbs = 1900lbs.

A steel trailer of the same size w/ ramp 1000lbs

Just makes sense to go aluminum. Freind of mine pulls one with 4 tractors with a Chevette!

Are you sure the rating is 2,000 pounds? Looking at the Honda site it could be 1,500 pounds. http://automobiles.honda.com/cr-v/specifications.aspx They could have a different rating for trailers with brakes but dont see much detailed tow rating information.

Maybe a smaller aluminum utility trailer something like this could work.

What type of snowmobile trailer are you thinking about? 101" enclosed, 101" open, 7' wide V-nose? I have had snowmobiles for years before wheelhorses so I use my 101" enclosed 2 place clamshell . It is 8.5' wide and stuck out a lot with my last full size pickup and my current cargo van. I don't think you would be able to see the back corners with mirror extensions if you could even find them for the Pilot.

The tilt is manageable for loading but not ideal. Ramps would be better IMO. I added a few fold down D-rings for securing the tractors down because the is nothing to hook to inside. I think a landscape type would definitely be easier for loading and securing tractors. Aluminium is nice for the weight savings and way better than steel on the salty highways. But it was designed around snowmobiles and suits them best. I guess it comes down to where you are willing to sacrifice.

One thought on landscape trailers with fold down ramps - the mesh on the ramp will hinder your gas mileage and will also add strain to the tow vehicle. The ramp will catch a lot of wind and provide a tremendous amount of air drag that your vehicle will have to overcome. It would be better with a small vehicle like you got to use removable ramps.

I have a smaller 4x8 open Haul'n Trailer and use ramps. It was cheap and has worked perfectly for a number of years now. Tractor Supply offers a number if light weight 4x8 and slightly larger trailers which your CRV will pull with no issue so long as you don't load it down with lead bars.

Gents, Nick is right it is 1500, not sure where I got 2000 from, anyways all I want to load is a tractor, a blower and a deck when I purchase, should be no more than that, so what would a 4x8 w/ a 416 and say a 48" deck and SS blower weigh?

If your looking to haul one tractor then a lightweight angle iron with mesh floor 5x8 might work. I think Lowes had one those on sale for $598 a week or so back. Not sure what they weigh but you could leave off the ramp gate and use ramps to save some weight

Look at the TSC site and it shows the 5x8 mesh as 620 pounds so that should get you in under 1,500 pounds. I think it might even the same brand that Lowes sells. TSC trailer

Strangely they show the 5x10 trailer as 400 pounds. 5x10 trailer

I was even thinking the 4x7 trailer for 499 this week, to save weight. Mr. Stevebo use to run the tires off a 4x7 buying all the WH's he could, so I am pretty confident that would do the trick.

I had a 4x7 new from TSC but then had an opportunity to do an even trade for a 5x8 :wh: buy whichever you can find. they both can haul 2000 gvw.. but i can tell you it may have had just a little more than that back and forth to the show last year

I still outpulled KenB's Jeepster...

i have 3 trailers that i use for work, ive had trailers my whole life infact,if you can afford the aluminum then go for it,they are perfect for a wheelhorse and less weight behind you is allways better, especially with no trailer brakes and the honda doesnt have alot of weight of its own

I have to say my Tahoe has posi and it really does pull (better than Timbo's 01 2500 HD) We shall see if I sell the Tahoe. The auction ends tomorrow about this time...
